George’s River Trout Unlimited (GRTU) welcomes Chandler Crans to speak March 12 in Rockport.

Crans will talk about his passion for fly fishing and how that was sparked by his experience at Maine TU Trout camp. The photo-based presentation will follow him from TU Camp through his more recent adventures with Montana fly shops, Yellow Dog Fly Fishing Adventures, Trident Fly Fishing, and the Bates Fly Fishing Club, showing the endless possibilities for young people to explore and experience the world through fly fishing.

Crans will also share some of his writing for Sweetwater Blog and highlight volunteer projects he has been part of with Montana Fish and Wildlife and the Galatin River Task Force.

Crans, a Camden native, attended Maine TU Trout Camp in 2010 then honed his skills fishing locally on the Megunticook and St. George rivers. Crans graduating from Camden Hills Regional High School in 2014 and is currently a senior at Bates College, majoring in economics.

He ventured west during the summer of his sophomore year at Bates and fell in love with the streams and rivers of Montana. Crans has since worked at Sweetwater Fly Shop, interned at Yellow Dog Fly Fishing Adventures, written for Trident Fly Fishing, and is currently the president of the Bates College Fly Fishing Club.

He plans on guiding in Alaska this summer after graduation.

Information on Maine TU Trout Camp will be available at the meeting. Maine TU Trout Camp is a fly fishing camp for 13-17 year olds offered every June on the shores of the Kennebec River at Evergreens Campground in Solon, ME. The camp is supported by TU’s national offices as well as numerous Maine businesses, educators, outdoors people and regional TU chapters such as GRTU. Each year GRTU offers partial and full scholarships to qualified applicants from the midcoast region. Applications for the 2018 Maine TU Trout Camp are due April 15.

Trout Unlimited is a nonprofit with a mission dedicated to conserve, protect and restore North America’s cold water fisheries and their watersheds. The GRTU meeting March 12 will be held in the upstairs mezzanine at Flatbread Company in Rockport.

The meeting will start at 6 p.m. with an informal gathering for those who wish to converse and enjoy a casual meal.
