Megunticook Watershed Warden’s Report

Ice-Out was called at 9:00 AM on Saturday, March 27th.  A thunderstorm Friday night with gusty winds churned up the water and rid the central part of Megunticook Lake of ice so I could navigate the patrol boat from the dams to the Ken Bailey Bridge (the definition of Ice-Out on Megunticook).

The winner is Doug Stewart with a guess of March 27 th at 9:37 AM!  Second place went to Colleen Duggan who guessed March 26th at 2:20 PM.  Colleen has a nice story explaining her guess:

When I sent my estimate in to you my family was in quarantine as my son, Juju, was covid positive (gratefully asymptomatic and fine).  We tried to get out each day hiking far from others, masked up and keeping a distance from each other.  On a windy, bitter day overlooking the lake north of Maiden’s Cliff I was struck by how much ice was out already.  My son had to wait out his quarantine until friday the 26th to go back to school.  I decided that friday March 26th would be “Juju out” (of quarantine) and “Ice Out” day  for our beloved Megunticook, to mark a turning point of this long, long winter and shut down.  Both Juju and I were born around 2:20pm in the day so that seemed like the right time to pick.

Congratulations Doug, you have won a $100.00 gift Certificate to Maine Sport and a year’s subscription to the Camden Herald.  Colleen has won a $50.00 gift certificate to Viking Lumber.

In the interest of physical distancing we are not personally presenting the prizes this year, we’ll have to settle for virtual handshakes!  But here are our lucky (or knowledgeable) winners.
